My college doesn’t give credit for internships, but i still want to do one for experience. can i?

i’m majoring in communications (i want to work in the news industry), but my school doesn’t offer credits. i’m willing to take an unpaid internship, as long as i’m at a local news station in my hometown (i do not have any money at all to travel out of town/state for an internship). will i even have a chance at an internship if i am not awarded credit for it?
